Ball Valves vs. Gate Valves
Ball valves and gate valves can both control the movement of liquids through piping systems, but the way they operate and the jobs they're best suited for are different.
If you're deciding between the two, the right choice depends on how frequently the valve will be operated, the type of flow control required, and the conditions within the system.
How Does a Ball Valve Work?
A ball valve contains a rotating ball with an opening through its center. Turning the handle rotates the ball, either aligning the opening with the pipe to allow flow or turning it perpendicular to stop flow.
Because they typically require only a quarter turn to open or close, ball valves can provide quick shutoff.
They are commonly used when a system needs reliable on/off control and frequent operation.
How Does a Gate Valve Work?
Instead of rotating a ball, a gate valve uses a gate that moves up and down to control flow.
When fully open, the gate moves out of the fluid path. Closing the valve lowers the gate until it blocks the passage.
Gate valves generally require multiple turns to fully open or close, making them better suited to applications where valves remain fully open or fully closed for longer periods rather than being operated constantly.
Ball Valve or Gate Valve?
Here's a simple way to compare them:
Ball valves are commonly selected when quick operation and dependable shutoff are priorities.
Gate valves can be useful when unrestricted flow through a fully opened valve is important and the valve doesn't need to be operated frequently.
Neither is automatically better for every plumbing system. Pressure, temperature, fluid compatibility, valve material, pipe size, and operating requirements should all be considered.
What About Flow Regulation?
Ball and gate valves are generally used primarily for isolation rather than precise throttling. Operating a valve partially open when it isn't designed for that purpose can contribute to wear or other performance problems.
If an application requires regular flow regulation, a valve specifically designed for that function may be more appropriate.
