What Causes Pressure Drops in Compressed Air Systems?

Piping that's too small for the required airflow can contribute to excessive pressure loss, particularly when demand is high. Long piping runs and system layouts with numerous bends, fittings, and connections can also affect performance.

Is Demand Higher Than the System Can Supply?

Sometimes the problem isn't a leak or restriction. Adding pneumatic tools or equipment increases demand on the compressed air system. If demand begins to exceed available capacity, pressure can fall during periods of heavy use.

Monitoring when pressure drops occur can provide useful clues. A problem that appears only when several pieces of equipment operate simultaneously may point toward a capacity or demand issue.

A Simple Troubleshooting Approach

When you notice an unusual pressure drop, work through the system rather than immediately assuming one component is responsible:

  1. Compare pressure at different points in the system.

  2. Inspect hoses, fittings, valves, and connections for leaks.

  3. Check filters and other components for restrictions.

  4. Consider whether equipment demand has recently increased.

  5. Compare current performance with manufacturer specifications and normal system readings.

Regular monitoring can make this process easier because maintenance teams have a better understanding of what normal pressure looks like throughout the system.
